As per AS 1884-2012 Appendix A, and ASTM F2170, holes are drilled in the concrete and then sleeved, capped and left undisturbed for 72 hours for the moisture in the air and the moisture in the air and the moisture in the concrete to equalise. A measuring probe is then inserted into the sleeve and moisture content, and the temperature of the test hole and ambient temperature are all recorded.
Timber moisture meters are used in two operating modes: search mode and measurement mode. Search mode utilises a capacitive-coupled sensor and gives relative readings up to 20 mm depth into the material it is held against. This mode is used for rapid surveys to pinpoint any problem areas. Measurement mode measures electrical conductivity between two-electrode pins. This conductivity is expressed as a moisture content level for the timber under testing. A calibration check is performed at the start and end of each survey session using the calibration device.
Moisture measurements are timber species dependant and temperature dependant and therefore an adjustment must be made to compensate.
Data are presented in tables and on CAD drawings where applicable.
